This region, which includes Shakespeare's country and the Cotswolds,
forms a large part of central England. Stratford-upon-Avon is the home
of Shakespeare and is an excellent point from which to visit other
historic towns in the area. The Cotswolds, to the south, are famous for
their beautiful honey-coloured villages and their stately homes and
gardens. In the north, Staffordshire is famous for its potteries and for
the open hills of the Peak District. The "Marches" provide a total
contrast: a land of black and white villages, this area offers a wide
range of sporting activities. The city of Birmingham, in the centre of
the region, boasts good theatres and shopping facilities. Its
international airport has direct flights to over 40 European cities,
with onward connections world-wide.
