Manchester and Liverpool, home of the Beatles, are the two main cities of this region. Both have good shopping facilities, bars, restaurants and a lively nightlife. Southeast of Manchester lies the Peak District, offering great countryside for those who enjoy moderately strenuous walks. Further south, the town of Chester is encircled by a two-mile ring of medieval and Roman walls. The town itself is a delightful combination of Tudor and Victorian buildings.
