Its beaches, once a smugglers' meeting place, are dotted with friendly seaside resorts. Brighton, the most famous of this region's resorts, offers entertainment and all year round learning programmes, as do the towns of Eastbourne and Hastings. With more stately homes and castles than perhaps any region in England, the South East has something for everyone. Canterbury, with its ancient cathedral, the rolling splendour of the Downs, the amusement park at Thorpe are but a few of the varied attractions to be enjoyed. London is within easy access, making an ideal weekend trip for those wishing to visit the capital. Driving to the area from mainland Europe is now extremely easy thanks to the new Channel Tunnel, and of course traditional ferry transport is also available.
